A new YouTube video campaigning against drink-driving during the Christmas and New Year period highlights the fact that Thailand has the highest rate of road-accident fatalities in the world outside of a war zone.
Prominent businessman Sermsin Samalapa on Wednesday uploaded the 55-second “Drink Drive Death” clip, of which he was executive producer, with the intention of raising awareness among the public about the danger of driving while drunk. Sermsin cited statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Probation Department, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, which indicate that drink-driving is the main cause of road accidents during the New Year holidays.

A total of 727 people have been arrested for drunk driving on Thursday and Friday, the first two days of the seven-day monitoring period of drunk driving, a senior official said.
Thawatchai Thaikhiew, deputy permanent secretary at the Justice Ministry, said the statistic was collected by the Corrections Department.
The department has been informed that 1,107 motorists had been arrested and would be given social service punishment because of bad driving during the first two days.
Of this, 727 were arrested for drunk driving, 43 for reckless driving, one for road racing, and 336 for testing positive for drug use while driving. He said 70 of the cases happened in Bangkok, 48 in Surin, 45 in Mahasarakham, 36 in Nonthaburi, and 24 in Chachoengsao.

Drink-driving behind 90% of violations
Almost 4,000 motorists have been put on probation for traffic law violations nationwide, the department added. [
Justice Ministry deputy permanent secretary Thawatchai Thaikhiew yesterday revealed the figures relating to court probation orders against traffic laws violators nationwide during the holiday period between Dec 28 and Jan 2.
A total of 3,936 motorists have been put on probation. Of them, 3,515 cases involved drink-driving or about 89%, while 44 cases involved reckless driving (just over 1%), as well as 376 other traffic violations (nearly 10%), Mr Thawatchai said.
