Better Australian tourist safety urged
PHUKET - Australia has called for better safety of Australians visiting Phuket, now called the most dangerous place in the world for Australians despite being one of the country's top holiday destinations.
Jonathan Kenna, deputy head of mission at the Australian embassy in Thailand, said on Tuesday safety was at the top of the priority list, as more tourists from the country head for the kingdom.
Another problem was better transport from Phuket international airport to town and other beaches as the resort island now has just one road to link two places.
The concern was raised in talks with Phuket governor Maitree Inthusut.
Australians topped visitors from Oceania to Thailand. About 930,000 tourists from Australia visited Thailand last year, a 12% increase over 2011, according to the Tourism Department.
Thailand was deemed "the most dangerous place" for Australians followed by Greece, the Herald Sun reported in January, citing figures from the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The 100 Australians who died in Thailand last year accounted for one in eight of the 791 deaths on foreign soil, it said.
The call from Australia followed a similar appeal from the European Union last Friday.
David Lipman, the EU ambassador to Thailand, said on Friday that transport, safety and jet ski scams were all high on the list of problems facing European visitors.
Jet ski operators for years have been accused of extorting money from tourists who rent the units. Typically they accuse the customer of having damaged the craft and demand tens of thousands of baht for repairs of replacement. Their demands are sometimes backed by threats of violence.
Tourists from Europe, including non-EU members, totalled 4 million last year, up 6% from 2011. Phuket was one of the favourite stops in Thailand.

hej russer
dagens gave kommer ind af døren
Gun pointed at Russian in Phuket
A Russian man had a gun pointed at his head by a Thai man, in what appeared to be a misunderstanding over a woman in Phuket, and the incident was caught on video.
According to The Phuket News report on Wednesday, Vasiliy Tubaev, who came to Thailand on April 5 and rented an apartment in Phuket, got to know Ms Karn, a Thai woman who lived in the same building. He said he knew that Ms Karn was living with another man he was told was her brother.
The Russian said he heard somebody knocking loudly on his door and trying to open it, but he left it locked and the visitor went away.
Mr Tubaev said he later set up his video camera, pointed at the door, and when there was another loud knocking some time later he pressed the record button before opening the door.
There was a Thai man at the door who pointed a gun at him, forced him to his knees and told him to stay away from Ms Karn because she was his wife and that he must go back to Russia.
The man slapped and hit Mr Tubaev several times and pressed the pistol against his forehead before leaving.

Alt er muligt i The land of Smile.

Police: Remove gunpoint threat video
Phuket's police chief said on Thursday the case involving a Russian man being assaulted and held at gunpoint by a Thai man was a personal matter and called for the removal of the video of the incident from YouTube, saying it might upset Russians or create ill-will towards Thais.
Phuket provincial police chief Chote Chawalwiwat
Pol Maj Gen Chote Chawalwiwat said the case was only a personal conflict stemming from the suspect’s discontent after he had learned that the Russian took his wife to Khao Lak, a famous tourist destination in Phangnga province.
He warned that the incident caught on the video and posted on YouTube could escalate into dissatisfaction among Russians toward Thais.
He also called on the concerned authorities to remove the video from YouTube to avoid causing possible damage to Phuket and Thailand.
