The Appeals Court on Tuesday sentenced Sondhi Limthongkul, a core member of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), to a suspended one-year jail term and a fine of 20,000 baht in a defamation case filed by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
In this case, Mr Sondhi was named first defendant and Khunthong Lorlertserivanich, editor and publisher of Manager daily, second defendant.
The lawsuit stated that in the period March 6 to 22, 2006, Mr Sondhi said in in speeches made on a PAD stage at Sanam Luang before a large number of people that Thaksin was a prime minister who exchanged money for love from the people and was obsessed with black magic and superstition.
Mr Sondhi also accused Thaksin of hiring a team to hunt him down, the lawsuit said.
The Criminal Court on Dec 25, 2007 found Mr Sondhi guilty as charged and sentenced him to three years imprisonment without suspension and acquitted the second defendant.
Mr Sondhi appealed.
The Appeals Court today reduced the penalty on Mr Sondhi to one year in jail, suspended for two years, and a fine of 20,000 baht.
The court also ordered Mr Sondhi to publish the court verdict in the Manager daily for five consecutive days
