More than 1,500 drug suspects were arrested and more than 12,000 methamphetamine pills, along with crystal methamphetamine or ice, marijuana and cocaine seized in a week of raids in Bangkok.
Deputy Bangkok police chief Sumeth Ruangsawas said on Tuesday that Metropolitan Police Divisions 1-9 launched a series of raids in Bangkok between March 15-21.
A total of 1,583 drug suspects were arrested. Of these, 1,177 were charged with drug taking, 259 with possession of drugs and 141 with drug trafficking. Two major drug traffickers and four drug suspects wanted on arrest warrants had also been captured.
He said 12,575 methamphetamine pills, 13.9 grammes of crystal methamphetamine, widely known as ice, 42 packets of marijuana and 22 grammes of cocaine and two firearms and ammunition were confiscated during the raids.

An Australian man was arrested with possession of counterfeit currency, after he was caught red-handed trying to exchange US dollar bills in South Pattaya.
Pattaya, 15th March 2011 [PDN]: At 10 p.m., Police Major Aroon Prompan, Chief Officer of Tourist Pattaya Department, Chonburi with the team held a press conference in regards to the arrest of 55-year-old Australian man, Mr. Garry Leon Skowronski (Passport No.M 7846734). The suspect was charged with trading of counterfeit currency. He was caught red-handed trying to exchange seven USD$100 bills, of which five were fake and two were unidentified. The exchange took place at TT Exchange Shop (located at 27/32 Moo.10 Pattaya No.2 Rd, South Pattaya Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi).
Police Major, Aroon, stated that he was informed by Miss Kanjana Butsa-ad, the TT exchange shop assistant, that a foreign man wanted to exchange counterfeit US currency. When the police arrived at the scene, the suspect, and his Thai girlfriend (Miss Patarawadee Raha, aged 29) tried to escape but was unsuccessful. The police checked the suspicious dollar bills. As the result, two notes were identified as fake because the numbers on the bill matched. The police took these two fake dollar bills and used them as evidence to arrest the suspect
The officers also went to the suspect’s house (Room No. 315 Sabai Inn Hotel, 380/5, Soi 2, Pattaya No.2 Rd, Moo.9, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi). The police searched the house and found another 3 fake dollar bills, which all contained the same number. In total, the police found 8 fake notes and 2 unidentified bills – all belonged to the suspect.
Mr. Skowronski argued that he has been exchanging money back in Australia without any problems. He defended that he did not know these notes were fake. However, the police was not convinced with his statement. The police charged the suspect with possession of counterfeit currency, regardless of his denial. The suspect was detained for further investigation.
