About 1,000 farmers on Monday block the Phitsanulok - Nakhon Sawan road for the second day running, demanding the government raise the guaranteed price of rice for pledged crops to 14,000 baht per tonne.
On Sunday, the farmers from the lower northern provinces of Phitsanulok, Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet began blocking all four main in-bound and four out-bound lanes of Highway 117 at kilometre marker No 10 in front of Naresuan University in Muang district of Phitsanulok.
They left only the frontage roads open to traffic.
The farmers raised three demands made earlier on the government:
- to increase the guaranteed rice price from 10,000 baht to 14,000 baht per tonne;
- to increase the quota for the rice price guarantee scheme from 25 to 40 tonnes per family; and
- to guarantee the price of paddy with 30 per cent moisture at 10,000 baht per tonne.
They vowed to continue their rally until the National Rice Policy Committee chaired by the prime minister replies to their demands.
