In Thailand, Buddhism and the monks that lead the religion are deeply revered and hold a special place in Thai society. But a series of scandals involving corruption, adultery, drug use and even murder have undermined the religion’s moral authority.
This week on Foreign Correspondent the ABC’s South-East Asia Correspondent Lauren Day reports on the ever growing number of scandals engulfing the religion. She talks to the Thai police who are going undercover to hunt down badly behaving monks and she heads out on patrol with the Monk Police whose aim is to catch wayward monks and drag them into line.

“เดนมาร์กและไทยมีความเป็นเพื่อนกันมากว่า 400 ปี เริ่มจากเรือสินค้าของเดนมาร์กมาถึงสยามในช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 17 ปัจจุบัน ความร่วมมือของเราครอบคลุมถึงการค้า วัฒนธรรม ความยั่งยืน และสัมพันธภาพระหว่างประชาชน
สำหรับชาวเดนมาร์ก ประเทศไทยเป็นสถานที่ที่พิเศษมาก จากมรดกไทยอันล้ำค่า น้ำใจไมตรีในการต้อนรับอบอุ่นในทุกความหมาย และความเปิดกว้างของคนไทยทำให้ทุกวันเป็นวันพิเศษ
ความผูกพันพิเศษนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นได้จากตัวเลข
เมื่อปีที่แล้ว ชาวเดนมาร์ก 140,000 คนมาเยือนประเทศไทย และปัจจุบันมีชาวเดนมาร์กราว 4,000 ถึง 6,000 คนอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศไทย
ในขณะเดียวกัน เดนมาร์กก็ภูมิใจที่ได้ต้อนรับชุมชนชาวไทยที่มีชีวิตชีวาซึ่งมีประชากรราว 14,000 คน
ในระดับส่วนตัว ผมรู้สึกซาบซึ้งใจอย่างยิ่งกับความรักที่ชาวเดนมาร์กจำนวนมากมีต่อประเทศไทย และเช่นเดียวกันกับความรักของชาวไทยที่มีต่อเดนมาร์ก”
การค้าและการลงทุนถือเป็นรากฐานที่สำคัญของความสัมพันธ์ไทย-เดนมาร์ก โดยเริ่มมีการติดต่อระหว่างกันครั้งแรกในสมัยอยุธยาเมื่อปี 1621 ซึ่งตรงกับรัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระเจ้าทรงธรรม และสมเด็จพระเจ้าคริสเตียนที่ 4 แห่งเดนมาร์กและนอร์เวย์ (His Majesty King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway) ในสมัยที่ราชอาณาจักรเดนมาร์กและราชอาณาจักรนอร์เวย์ยังรวมเป็นราชอาณาจักรเดียวกัน
ต่อมาทั้งสองประเทศได้สถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตอย่างเป็นทางการในรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งตรงกับรัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีเฟรเดอริกที่ 8 แห่งเดนมาร์ก (His Majesty King Frederick VIII of Denmark) โดยการลงนามในสนธิสัญญาทางพระราชไมตรี การค้า และการเดินเรือ 1858 (Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation 1858) เมื่อวันที่ 21 พฤษภาคม 1858
เดนมาร์กได้จัดตั้งสถานกงสุลที่กรุงเทพฯ ปี 1860 ในขณะที่ฝ่ายไทยได้เปิดสถานอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงโคเปนเฮเกน เมื่อปี 1954 จวบจนกระทั่งปี 1958 ไทยจึงได้ยกระดับความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตกับเดนมาร์กขึ้นเป็นระดับเอกอัครราชทูต
หลังจากการลงนามในสนธิสัญญาดังกล่าว การค้าระหว่างสองราชอาณาจักรได้ขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็วตามเส้นทางเดินเรือ โดยเฉพาะการก่อตั้งบริษัท Andersen & Co. ในประเทศไทยเมื่อปี 1884 และบริษัทอีสต์เอเชียติก เมื่อปี 1897 ที่มีบทบาทสำคัญอย่างยิ่งในการขยายการค้าระหว่างสองประเทศและเพิ่มการส่งออกของไทยในภูมิภาคอื่น
นอกจากนี้ บริษัทด้านวิศวกรรมเดนมาร์กที่ได้เคยมีบทบาทในการพัฒนาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานของประเทศไทยในอดีตทั้งระบบรถไฟไปจนถึงไฟฟ้า ก็มีส่วนสำคัญในการวางรากฐานการลงทุนของเดนมาร์กในประเทศไทยในยุคปัจจุบันด้วย

For danskerne er Thailand et helt særligt sted. Den rige thailandske arv, den varme gæstfrihed i ordets fulde forstand og thailændernes åbenhed gør hver dag til noget særligt.
Dette særlige bånd afspejles i tallene.
Sidste år besøgte 140.000 danskere Thailand, og i øjeblikket bor der omkring 4.000 til 6.000 danskere i Thailand.
Samtidig er Danmark stolt af at byde velkommen til et levende thailandsk samfund på omkring 14.000 mennesker.
På et personligt plan er jeg dybt rørt af den kærlighed, som så mange danskere har til Thailand, og den kærlighed, som thailændere har til Danmark.”
Handel og investeringer er vigtige fundamenter for de thailandsk-danske relationer. Den første kontakt mellem de to lande begyndte i Ayutthaya-perioden i 1621, under Kong Songtham og Hans Majestæt Kong Christian IV af Danmark og Norges regeringstid, da Kongerigerne Danmark og Norge blev forenet til ét kongerige.
De to lande etablerede senere formelle diplomatiske forbindelser under Kong Mongkuts regeringstid, hvilket faldt sammen med Hans Majestæt Kong Frederik VIII's regeringstid, ved at underskrive Venskabs-, Handels- og Søfartstraktaten 1858 den 21. maj 1858.
Danmark oprettede et konsulat i Bangkok i 1860, mens Thailand åbnede en ambassade i København i 1954, indtil 1958, hvor Thailand ophøjede de diplomatiske forbindelser med Danmark til ambassadørniveau.
Efter underskrivelsen af traktaten udvidede handlen mellem de to kongeriger sig hurtigt langs søruterne, især med etableringen af Andersen & Co. i Thailand i 1884 og East Asiatic Company i 1897, som spillede en betydelig rolle i at udvide handlen mellem de to lande og øge den thailandske eksport til andre regioner.
Derudover har danske ingeniørvirksomheder, der tidligere har spillet en rolle i udviklingen af Thailands infrastruktur, fra jernbaner til elektricitet, også spillet en vigtig rolle i at lægge grundlaget for Danmarks investeringer i Thailand i nutiden.
