Thailand's Revenue Department has proposed imposing a 1000 baht "departure tax" on all outbound airline passengers, both Thais and foreigners, to curb excessive overseas spending.
The proposal has faced resistance from tourism officials who fear that it may negatively impact Thailand's recovering tourism industry. The department is currently collecting public opinions on the matter through a survey on its website.
Although the deputy director of the department has said that they have no plans to impose the tax, they are required to assess the 40-year-old decree's suitability by collecting public opinions.
The proposed tax has caused confusion and concern for airlines and tourism officials alike, who are already struggling to bring tourist numbers back to pre-pandemic figures

Exiled former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has expressed his desire to return home to Thailand by July to care for his grandchildren, as stated in a recent tweet.
Thaksin has failed to keep previous pledges to return, but this is the first time in recent years that a timeframe has been mentioned.
However, with several corruption cases and prison sentences handed down by Thai courts, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to fulfil his latest promise to return home.

Learn how Thailand's upcoming General Election on May 14 could impact the country's sex industry legislation.
Campaigners are pushing for the decriminalisation of sex work, which could give sex workers full rights in the formal economy.
Despite the industry's high visibility in Thailand, it remains largely informal and criminal, but sex workers are hopeful for change.

A man with a criminal record for sex crimes confessed to murdering 17-year-old Woramet “Ben” Taota, a Thai-British teenager, and is suspected of concealing the corpse.
During the re-enactment of the crime, the victim's relative attacked the accused with a wooden stick. The victim's girlfriend, 16-year-old Ping Pong, is still missing, and the accused has not revealed any information about her whereabouts.
The police are searching the area with sniffer dogs. The suspected killer is connected to drug dealing in the area, and the police have not ruled out the possibility that the murder was a drug deal gone wrong.

Thailand's Department of Medicine is warning against a dangerous cocktail of illicit drugs called "Happy Water," which has become an "epidemic" in the country's nightlife scene.
The drink is made by mixing various drugs, including ketamine, ecstasy, methamphetamine, diazepam, caffeine, and tramadol. Happy Water can cause stimulating, hallucinogenic, sedative, and depressive effects, making it dangerous when mixed with alcohol or taken in high quantities.
Drug dealers often pack the cocktail formula into sachets to be distributed around nightclubs and mixed into drinks. Travellers are warned not to accept drinks from strangers in Thailand's nightlife venues in case they've been spiked.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is launching free shuttle bus services connecting Samsen Road to various areas in Thon Buri to alleviate traffic congestion on school routes.
With the reopening of schools, the shuttle bus services will provide a much-needed alternative for parents seeking to avoid traffic congestion caused by construction on the new extension of the Purple Line. Each electric feeder bus can accommodate 20 seated passengers and has a total capacity of 35 passengers, making six stops along the route.
The BMA hopes to relieve traffic woes associated with the reopening of the city's schools by providing this convenient transportation option for commuters.
